Programme introduction

Are you passionate about sports? Do you want to make a change? Then this unique Bachelor's programme in Sports Studies is for you. The inspiration and power of sport give you great opportunities to make a real difference.

The Institute of Sports Studies at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen offers a three year Bachelor’s programme, made up of 180 ECTS. This international programme helps you become an innovative sports professional. As a change agent, you are able to make a difference at both the individual and societal level. The power of sports lays within the three core values of sports an physical activity:

  • sports and physical activity is essential for a healthy lifestyle,
  • sports creates business value,
  • sports is the social power of communities and nations

The programme is characterised by its professional focus. Each year you will gain relevant work experience. Most modules centre around a practical assignment in a professional organisation. Academic courses are designed to prepare you for this challenge.

Programme structure

The first year is the so-called propaedeutic phase (60 ECTS). In this phase, you will develop professional competences by working on several projects for individuals, businesses or organisations. Supported by your teachers and fellow students, you will start developing a sense of responsibility from the first day. Sharing knowledge and experiences plays a major role.

In the first semester of the second year, you develop a strategic programme for a European city based on practical research. In the second semester, you focus on creating and managing change during a work placement. Your role is primarily to be a change agent. During the year, you take courses on subjects like marketing, sports development, management and organisation, organisational policy and consultancy.

In the final year, you will work at a professional organisation for your graduation project. During this year, you add practical value to the organisation by developing and implementing services and products that help the organisation innovate. The three core values of sports, which are health, economy and social impact, are your starting point.
