First of all, check out our latest guide to student life in the city of Rijeka, Croatia!

We feel that it could replace Bulgaria as one of the destinations of choice for good British students looking to study medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.

Two years ago, the University of Zagreb launched a degree in veterinary medicine in English. Numbers of students are capped at a very sensible level of 25. Already British students make up one of the biggest groups on campus, along with French and German students. The excellent reputation of the veterinary faculty at the University of Zagreb makes this a good choice for students who don’t quite have the grades required to access British veterinary schools. There is no entrance exam at present so students will be assessed primarily on their academic track record and work experience.

In 2017, the University of Zagreb launched its Master’s degree in dentistry in English. This 6-year degree includes over 2,000 clinical hours, far in excess of what British students can expect if they study in the UK. Under current regulations, this covers the vocational training year requirements students have in the UK after they graduate, meaning that the length of time required to become a registered dentist is exactly the same as in the UK.

Also in 2017, the University of Rijeka started teaching medicine in English. There are 30 places in this year’s class with future intakes likely to be capped at 50. This is far smaller than many central European medical schools and in our experience, this means that students are far more likely to graduate on time and enter the medical profession. Having visited the university last month, we can certainly recommend the facilities and teaching hospitals of the medical school. Also, its location on the coast makes Rijeka an excellent place to live with many tourist resorts in the vicinity.

We can happily provide full details on all these options if you are interested in learning more. Don’t be surprised if we launch a www.studyincroatia.co.uk website in the near future!
