Options for Medics, Dentists & Vets Abroad

The low-down on 2014 Admissions in Spain & Italy

Human SkeletonIn Britain, many aspiring students who wish to study Veterinary Medicine, Human Medicine or Dentistry, and would become excellent Veterinarians, Doctors or Dentists, are often forced to reconsider their career options. This situation has led to an increasing number of students studying for their Veterinary/Medical/Dental Degree abroad, where courses are taught in English and are fully recognised, enabling them to work as Veterinarians or Doctors back home.

While there are inevitable complications involved in studying abroad (most usually financial or linguistic) A Star Future only work with options that we believe offer not only excellent facilities and teaching but also high standards of pastoral care.

Study Medicine in Rome, Italy

We have now received full details of an exciting opportunity to study medicine entirely in English at Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore - Europe's largest private university.

Medical students at Universita Cattolica Sacre del Cuore

The degree is a six-year fully integrated Masters in Medicine and Surgery.

One of the most distinguishing features of the Program is the complete integration of basic and clinical sciences. This will be achieved through a multidisciplinary approach and an early involvement in patient management which includes moral and ethical issues, as well as legal responsibilities which are at the basis of the profession.

The entry requirements for the medical degree are usually a minimum of BBB at A level but the most important criteria is success on the university's own entrance examination. This covers similar ground to the UKCAT exam and we can supply sample online tests on request.
The entrance exam takes place in London on 3rd April 2014 for entry this autumn and the deadline for registration is 14th March 2014.

You can find full details here.

Medicine and Dentistry in Spain

In the last two years we have sent a number of dentists (and one medic) to study at various universities in Valencia, Spain. All of these students are extremely happy with their quality of life there so we have every confidence in recommending these options to British students in the future.

Here is a summary of the various options that are currently available at Universidad Europea and Cardenal Herrera University.

Universidad Europea graduates

1. Dentistry at Universidad Europea in Valencia(5 yrs). This course is taught in English for the first two years and then in Spanish. We expect that Valencia will be full very quickly as it has proved to be very popular every year. For further details please contact us.

2. Dentistry at Universidad Europea in Madrid (5 yrs). This is the same programme as taught in Valencia. There is some suggestion that Madrid will be awarded permission to teach entirely in English by the Ministry of Education. This has not yet happened and our advice would certainly be to assume that this will not change.

3. Medicine at CEU Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia (6 Years). After four years of trying to get approval to teach medicine in English, CEU has finally been granted permission to do so. The first course started in September 2013 and we were able to get one British student admitted at very short notice. Her experience is very positive and we are confident that British students will do very well here.

The degree is offered in English only in the first two years, after which you will have to continue your studies in Spanish. Students need to prove they have a decent level of Spanish before they can even start the second year (B1).

4. Medicine at Universidad Catolica de Murcia (UCAM)and Medical University Pleven, Bulgaria (6.5 years).

UCAM studentsThis course allows students to study in English all the way to graduation. However, it does require a knowledge of Bulgarian. The first two years are taught in Spain. Students will learn basic Bulgarian alongside their studies. After the pre-clinical years, students will transfer to Pleven to complete the clinical phase of their studies and to complete at least the first year of their training. This course starts in November 2014, giving students a chance to prepare a little longer for their relocation.

If you think that any of these options may be of interest to your students please contact usas soon as possible

Study Veterinary Medicine Abroad

We are delighted to announce that there is finally an opportunity to study Veterinary Medicine in western Europe.

Veterinary Student at Cardenal Herrera

Cardenal Herrera University, located on the outskirts of Valencia, Spain, is now offering a 5 year Veterinary Medicine degree. The course is taught entirely in English for the first year. The first semester of the second year is in English before the second semester is taught in Spanish.
The facilities at Cardenal Herrera University, including a clinic on the doorstep and a farm 20 minutes away, mean that students will have extensive real world experience from very early in their studies.
In contrast to medicine there is no requirement for you to know Spanish before you start your studies but clearly, you will have to learn the language not only for classes but also to manage relationships with pets' owners and farmers in the local community.

We are still waiting to finalise some details of this programme but if you are interested please contact us.

We can also advise on veterinary medicine opportunities in Poland and the Czech Republic that are taught entirely in English.

We are always conscious that the decision to study vocational health qualifications abroad is not as straightforward as for other subjects because it will usually be your second choice.

We hope that we are in a position to assist you with some sensible, proven alternatives in case you are denied the chance to pursue your chosen profession in the United Kingdom.

Please feel free to call us on 020 3586 4025 if you would like to discuss any of the opportunities open to you in 2014.
