Overview of the institution
The University of Newcastle is a comprehensive, international university and one of Australia’s leading research institutions. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs through five faculties: Business & Law; Education & Arts; Engineering & Built Environment; Health; Science & Information Technology.
The university operates on two main campuses. The largest is set on a 140 hectare natural bush land site at Callaghan, about 12km west of the Newcastle central business district. The other, located on an 85 hectare site adjacent to national parkland, is on the Central Coast at Ourimbah, about halfway between Newcastle and Sydney. The University’s Conservatorium of Music, Legal Center and Graduate School of Business are all located near Civic Park in the centre of Newcastle.
The University’s student population is over 26,000, including some 4,700 students from 100 different countries.
We were pioneers in problem-based learning which has been emulated locally and overseas and which now provides the educational foundation for most of our professional degree programs. Our teacher education program is the largest in Australia and our medicine, engineering, law, architecture and building programs are highly regarded by their respective professions. This is evident from the outstanding employment rates for our graduates.

Overview of the location
Set on a breathtaking stretch of Australia’s Pacific Ocean coastline, Newcastle is the only city in Australia where the central business district is positioned simultaneously on the beach and the harbour waterfront.
Newcastle boasts some of Australia’s best beaches and waterways for swimming, surfing, sailing and other water sports. Nearby Lake Macquarie, the largest coastal saltwater lake in Australia, is a short drive from the city.
With a regional population of about 500,000, Newcastle supports a thriving business and commercial sector and an excellent network of health care and educational facilities. Combined with a low cost of living and a favourable climate, Newcastle presents a relaxed and welcoming lifestyle.
Only 10 minutes drive from the city, visitors can get up close and personal with some of Australia’s unique and beautiful wildlife. Blackbutt Reserve hosts spacious modern facilities which allow close viewing of a variety of animals such as kangaroos koalas, emus, wallabies, wombats and a significant array of Australian birds. It’s also a great spot for a barbecue.
Newcastle is home to some of the best entertainment venues on Australia’s east coast and offers many of the usual city comforts – restaurants, cafes, parks and gardens, theatres, art galleries, shopping centres and nightclubs. It has built a solid reputation for the wealth of talent radiating from the city. From annual cultural activities such as the Shootout Film Festival and the This is Not Art exhibition, Newcastle boasts a vibrant artistic and creative scene, attracting attention worldwide. Newcastle also hosts Surfest and the Maritime Festival which annually attract tens of thousands of visitors.
In 2004, Newcastle celebrated its 200th birthday. Today Newcastle is a thriving cosmopolitan city with a relaxed lifestyle, vibrant cultural life and civic pride.
Institutional facilities
In addition to its excellent academic facilities, NUSport (Newcastle University Sport) offers University of Newcastle students a comprehensive range of sporting facilities. The sports facilities at the Callaghan campus are amongst the finest of any university in the country and include:
- Six ovals used for sports such as baseball, cricket, rugby union, American football, rugby league, soccer, touch football, ultimate frisbee and archery
- Squash centre
- Tennis centre with four hard courts and four synthetic grass
The campus also houses the Forum Sports and Aquatic Centre which features a 50m indoor heated pool, a cardio theatre with over 45 pieces of electronic equipment and a large weights training area.
