Which subjects can I study abroad?

We will add to this list over time but here are some of the most popular subjects for British students:

You will already be aware of the vast array of courses available at British universities. Many subjects are taught at almost every university and it is easy to see the differences between courses, at least in terms of their content. League tables can give you some idea of which university is the best place for your particular subject. What no league table can do is give you any clue as to which is the right place for you. That's down to you.

When it comes to studying abroad choosing a course and a university can be bewildering. Some universities will be quite straightforward; you will easily be able to recognise the courses that are taught there and what you should learn if you choose to go there. Other universities, particularly in the USA, will not give you a clear list of courses such as you would expect to find in a British university prospectus. This does not mean that your subject does not exist (although it might not - you won't find many sport or fashion degrees at top US universities, for example). The structure of degree programs can be very different in countries around the world meaning that you won't specialise in your chosen subject until you have completed at least one year of general higher education. In some countries, some subjects such as law are more often taught at postgraduate level only.

The purpose behind these subject pages is to give you an idea of some of the issues relating to studying particular subjects abroad. We will also address any obvious differences in courses and countries of which we are aware. However, we don't know everything and the situation can change.

What these pages won't do is give you information about what studying a particular subject involves. There are plenty of other places where you can go for that kind of information and we would rather focus on things that you probably won't find elsewhere.

For each subject we will try to give you a few examples of various courses around the world that you might want to look in to as a starting point.
