This is the time in a child's development when growth, change and learning are rapid and exciting. Our courses in early childhood provide a foundation in human development and learning theories. Balanced with generous time spent in the classroom this course of study gives you the knowledge and experience needed for productive work with young children.
This is a four-year program that has an Early Childhood major delivered by the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) at UC. This EC Major is equivalent to the Diploma in Childrens Services and is embedded within the degree in the first two years. Your career scope includes work in childcare centres, preschools and primary schools.
This course is designed for students interested in working as a teacher in childcare, pre-school and primary school (K-6) settings. It provides students with a sound theoretical base for teaching including a strong emphasis on Human Development and Learning along with opportunities to develop a repertoire of practical skills in how to teach young children.
The course is carefully structured with a balance between theory and practice in teaching. Students engage in a series of education and curriculum study units, which are clustered with appropriate professional experiences. This practical experience spans different levels and organisational modes of the childcare, pre-school and primary (K-6) settings. The requirements of the CIT Diploma of Childrens Services are subsumed into the Early Childhood Major.
Students completing this course of study will be qualified to teach children in childcare, pre-school and primary (K-6) settings, with a Birth-8 years of age specialty.
