Are you curious about the secrets of life on our planet? Biology helps us to understand living organisms and this study program gives you a solid background for a future career in biology, e.g. within the fields of conservation, sustainable development, marine resources and molecular biology.
Biology is the knowledge about all living organisms, from the tiniest molecules constituting the cells building blocks to entire ecosystems. Our future and life quality depend on a sustainable exploitation of living resources, fighting pathogens and improving the production of food. You will take part in traditional lectures, laboratory work and discussion groups. The teaching language will be Norwegian in courses where only Norwegian students participate. The study programme includes excursions and field work to study sea eagles, sperm whales, Atlantic puffins and seals to mention some species.
You may specialize in marine ecology or molecular biology. You can study one semester at one of our collaboration universities, and you may include 15 weeks of work experience at a Norwegian or foreign company in your studies.
Programme:
This study programme is organized as similar studies at other universities and gives basic knowledge in biological topics like, ecology, evolution, biodiversity, botany, genetics, in addition to some chemistry, mathematics and statistics. In some courses the students must participate in lab and field activities. It is possible to continue with an MSc in Aquaculture or Marine Ecology after finishing this Bachelor's programme in biology.
Moreover the county of Nordland offers a number of qualities by which the rest of the world can just dream about! We have rare and spectacular species like killer whales, sperm whales, sea-eagles, Atlantic puffins, seals, and not to forget all more or less peculiar species in the sea. Field observations of such species are a compulsory part of the study, like e.g. whale safari of Andøya.
Programme structure:
Teaching is offered as lectures, and compulsory lab work and field-work. Most courses are taught during the entire semester. The study programme consists of 10 credit courses, which means that you will do three courses every semester.
The most common evaluation form is written school examinations, but also home examinations, oral examinations and portfolio assessment are used. Both internal and external examiners are used.
Evaluation:
Students take an active part in the evaluation of the courses in the program through mid-term and final evaluation. It is also conducted dialogue meetings between students and study responsible every semester.
Requirements:
The BSc in Biology programme has special requirements related to the major subjects in the field of study, Maths and physics/chemistry/biology. The subjects required are at the upper secondary school level. Alternatively they are at university/college level if you are required to document one year of university or college as part of your Basic Requirements. If you do not fulfil these requirements, but have comparable background from another educational institution, this should be documented, and will be evaluated by the University of Nordland.
